Where We Started

Begining our Journey

Landmark initiated “green building” programs in 2006, but the movement to a sustainable company began in 2008 when the Group teamed with The Natural Step to guide its transition. The Natural Step is an international non-government organization that assists organizations formulate a business case for sustainability through goal setting and monitoring.

The Natural Step uses a framework, based on scientific principles and systems thinking, to help profile the environmental relationships between customers, products, profits and operations. The framework is designed around four principles which Landmark Group has adopted.

4 sustainability principles

How is this different from “green”?

To start, “green” means different things to people and has many interpretations. It covers everything from global warming to business development to animal conservation and all subjects in-between. For the building industry, the general understanding of “green” is energy conservation and using recycled materials from renewable sources.

While these subjects are an part of sustainability, it is not our interpretation. Landmark adheres to Built Green Canada and EnerGuide performance ratings as benchmarks. We research all aspects of inputs from source, construction methodology, effects on people’s health, usage and eventually each homes disposability at the end of their life-cycle. Being green is a complex concept and involves all aspects of our business.
